Low sodium diets? Empty Low sodium diets?

Anyone else here been told to moderate their sodium/salt intake? It's part of my blood pressure control regimen, along with a couple pills every morning.

Biggest thing for me - read the labels! Not all foods are created equal. There is a wide range within food groups, even if you're an open-a-jar cook like me ;-) Use mostly low-salt or no-salt-added stuff and you can indulge in sausage with your spagetti.

Substitute when possible. If a recipe calls for garlic salt or onion salt or seasoned salt I use salt-free powders and blends like Mrs' Dash.

Funny thing is, after you do this for a while, some restaurant foods will taste way too salty!

Lucky for me my Dad had some sort of stomach problem when I was a kid. Doctor put him on no salt diet so Mom removed salt from the table and we never put it back on. We buy no salt added veggies and try to get low salt when no salt isn't possible. Needless to say with the exception of recipes where it's necessary the only thing I salt is my fries.

Good ideas on lowering salt intake. However, one needs some salt in your diet.

I looked it up.

Age 11 years and over need 6g per day (2300 mg sodium)
How much is 6g of table salt?
This is about one teaspoonful - not much. About three-quarters of the salt we eat is already in the food we buy.

Most people get enough.

I retain water like crazy, so I don't use salt, unless I need it for a recipe. I use onion powder and garlic powder, as well as quite a few other herbs - rosemary, sage, basil, ground bay leaf, etc. I'd rather have a good flavor than salty yuck. Yes, most restaurants serve overly salted foods, because that is what most Americans are used to. Blech.

But I have also given up breads of all kinds. Rarely eat crackers even. Sometimes pasta and rice. But then again, my diet is no where near normal.

We haven't used salt other than when called for in a recipe or to season meat before cooking. Don't even have it in a shaker for table use. Both shakers are full of pepper one at the table one at the stove.
We also buy no salt added vegetables which is good for those like me that are taking high blood pressure meds already. The only thing salt is good on is are potato chips and fries from McDonalds or Burger King. What a Face
